Findon Gentlemen’s Cycling Club rides in July 2025
Saturday 5th July 08.00am ride
PT confined to Analogue bike due to IoW pedal debacle, so parks car at Steyning (by the iron bridge over the Adur) and heads down the Downslink to the Airport for the Intraclavicle Brek.
Findon riders (JR, TK, MA, TB, MB and John C for brek only) have come over via the concrete road and pull into the same car park for a refreshing coffee, just missing PT by 5 minutes or so. All rv at the Hummingbird for a great brek.
PT then retraces Downslink ride to car, while others…..have not informed your editor. However, MA’s route was:
ZA was out in Dorset; he writes:
“Neglected to activate Strava until 1.8 mls into ride having started from Crossways Caravan & Motorhome Club Site just south of Moreton Station, off B3390. Turning L out of site, followed B 3390 SW before taking first turning L to cross railway line at Redbridge where road turns NE towards Moreton; whilst following this road I remembered to activate Strava, from which it should be possible to depict route taken crossing the River Frome, across Bovington Heath to Clouds Hill (NT), Lawrence of Arabia’s Cottage.
Returned to site (to ensure Margaret found her way back safely) before venturing back over Bovington Heath to Briantspuddle, Throop etc and thus back to site as shown on Strava. c.23 mls (c.8.5 + c.14.5)”His route is in green below:
Chris completed a marathon ride in Italy, while Kim was out in Denmark:
Saturday 12th July 08.00am ride
Only JR and PT turned out, on a sweltering day (31C forecast). A short ride was decided on, so we went:
up and over Cissbury to the Steyning road, north to Langmead and back along the SDW to Chanctonbury. Return to Findon via Buddington Bottom, for a light brek at DeeDee’s.
Saturday 19th July 08.00am ride
PT and JR (red) did a short circuit of Cissbury, Steyning Road, Langmead and Chanctonbury. MA (blue) peeled off for home (more on this story later), and JR and PT dropped down the fast track to the A24 at North Farm, then back to Findon. PT collected Richard by car from Steep Lane, then the peleton reconvened with Andy chez DeeDee for a brek and the lowdown on RT’s exploits and his bionic remodelling at the hands of our beloved NHS.
It was later learned from Mark that his steed had betrayed him when still a few miles short of the welcoming bosom of his family. As an FGCC man, MA did not buckle, but persevered and was able to enter negotiations with the bike shop for a replacement motor. The ensuing Whatsapp traffic included a mention of “Trigger’s Broom”.
Later in the morning, ZA set out to ride to the Mulberry for rugby-watching purposes – his route is shown in green.
Saturday 26th July 08.00am ride
PT and RK convened at OPG, and were invited to WHQ for a demonstration of tyre-plugging as JR mended his front wheel. A route to a vaguely identified cafe (“the blue one on the corner”) was suggested by JR, and we were so intrigued that we agreed and had him lead the way (red route).
Up Church Hill, then over to Clapham Woods and down Holt lane in very dry conditions, then along the A27 to Titnore Lane and up the track to Highdown
From Highdown we headed west over the footbridge to Angmering and south to John’s mystery brek venue in Rustington. This turned out to be “Grub and Gumption”; neither blue nor on a corner.
Excellent brek, after a shower made us move indoors. Route home was through the Kingston footpath, Ilex way, past the Mulberry, down to the coast then the traditional West Worthing/Tarring/Mill Lane/gallops/Bost Hill/superhighway.
Later in the morning, ZA set out to ride to the Mulberry for rugby-watching purposes – his route is shown in green.
Over in Denmark, Kim completed a circuit of 19.22 miles and 683 feet of climbing:
