“Just M le Bas and myself for the ride on Saturday. I foolishly suggested the four peaks as a route, forgetting that he would want to do it in the reverse order to the more gentlemanly route – up church hill, over to the high barn, down to the A24 and then the north face up to Chanctonbury, followed by Langmead, down the hill and straight on to double back along the side of Cissbury: only to be dragged up the diagonal steep bit.

M le Bas’ morning was satisfactorily completed when analysis of the regular “thunking” sound determined that I would finally have to dispose of my favourite tyre”.

“Riders included Messrs Roche, Leroux, Avery and myself.
I think that we did the same route as on 19th – maybe others can confirm. M Leroux had borrowed the Scott and enjoyed (!) the combination of middle ring not functioning and later on the left pedal falling off as we came round the east side of Cissbury. Party split at this point with Messrs Avery and Roche going round west side of Cissbury and down to Mr Roche’s ancestral home, and Messrs Leroux and Thomas going to Nepcroft so that M Leroux could borrow the Cannondale before going home, and myself also venturing to the Linga Longa (how could I miss out on all that cholesterol).”
