2009.03 March

Sat 7th March
Having had an excellent cream tea there on the Monarch’s Way ride the previous week, the early morning discussion was how to fit in a brek at The Edible Sandwich Company in Arundel and yet get Mr Topley off to his domestic duties by 10.30. Solution was for Messrs Budd, Avery and Thomas to ride across to Arundel via the gallops to the north of Angmering park estate. Meanwhile Messrs Topley and Roche took their bikes in LSV2 and then made their way back towards Findon to meet the peleton in the valley further west from the gallops – supposedly originally a tributary of the Arun:

An excellent brek was interrupted with the news that Zachary Allen had ridden up from Rustington to Chantry Post, where he had sighted snow:

Having not been able to establish phone contact with the peleton, he assumed that it had followed the Danish underwater route alongside the Arun from Amberley, and so was able to join the group for a late brek.
Messrs Budd, Roche and Thomas then returned to Findon via the road to Burpham and straight up to the SDW.
Total distance 22miles.

Sat 14th March – anniversary of the creation of the Kamikaze memorial.
The ride started off with grey drizzly weather. Messrs Budd, Topley and Thomas ascended the North (aka West) face to Chanctonbury from the A24, followed on to Langmead and thence round to Cissbury Car Park, round Cissbury and then a descent to Findon Valley via the Kamikaze memorial. This being the anniversary of its creation, a full maintenance was due:

Naturally this had to be followed by a brek in the Roche ancestral home, which received the Budd 5 star approval rating. John is the old establishment under new ownership? We noticed that John’s brek escape is now the chef’s special:-

Mr Topley reported a brief encounter with Honorary Gentleman Mr G Hastings in the square as he made off. The bustling charivari that is downtown Findon at that hour prevented a long exchange, but was able to report Mr H to appear in fine fettle (despite missing some of the recent rides).

Total of 10 miles.
