FGCC visit the Somme region in France

On Tuesday 9th April 10 gentlemen of the FGCC set off to take the ferry from Newhaven to Dieppe in fairly choppy seas and then to drive to Albert where we were met by our continental member who had travelled down from Denmark by train.

Our base was the Hotel de Prix in Albert a good central location for visiting a number of the locations of action during World War 1, as well as being perfect for wining and dining locations around the town.

Over 4 days of cycling totalling around 150 miles we were able to visit a number of the key sites as well as remembering in particular a number of people with family connections with some of our peloton. Cycling around the region made us especially aware of the large cemeteries and memorials in this relatively small area reflecting the huge number of men who sacrificed their lives. All these memorial sites were found to be in excellent condition thanks to the work of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
